A Bane on Humanity...and by Humanity, I mean WOMEN

Bane
1. a person or thing that ruins or spoils:

Fabulous word. Totally fitting for the topic of today's diatribe: MEN.
So what is it with men and being thoughtful/romantic? There are a few times per year when it is absolutely mandatory (Valentine's Day, anniversary, birthday, etc) yet so many guys are just totally clueless about it. The excuse I got yesterday after my observation of "You just aren't very romantic are you?" was "I try to be...I just don't know what to do..." This was later in the evening after he had received a card and some candy from me first thing in the morning. Yet I didn't get so much as a "Happy Valentine's Day."
Give me a break! I told him that anything out of the ordinary that would make me happy falls under the umbrella term 'romantic'. Will it change anything? Probably not. Men are just self-absorbed beasts most of the time, so what is the point of even trying or taking it personally? It's just a damn shame.

A Strange (but lucky) Occurrence

Recently my younger brother and I were talking about how we wonder how many family members on our dad's side are out there that we don't even know about. See, our deadbeat dad left when we were really little and we haven't seen him since, so we know zilch about that side of the family. A few years ago I had done a google search of our last name and found the name and email address of a relative in texas who was a teacher, Jill, but I'd never contacted her. How was I sure that she was related, you ask? Well, when the last name is Wolosonovich, there's a pretty good chance that all of us are related :-D

I told Josh this, and he looked her up and actually contacted her. She turned out to be the ex-wife of one of my dad's brothers, and she has 2 sons that live in Texas also, Eric and Scott. Turns out they grew up the same way as us, with no father around taking care of his responsibilities. Josh inspired me to do my own search and see who I could locate, and to my surprise I found the work phone number of a Wolosonovich right here in Tempe! I called and left a voicemail with my name, phone number, and email address, and soon thereafter received an email from what turned out to be my Uncle Mark! He is not close to the rest of his family and has kept his distance by choice.

So last Friday I met his wife, my Aunt Joy, for lunch here in Mesa, and we really hit it off and had a great time. This led to an invitation to their home yesterday to meet Mark, which was a great experience :-D

We are going over again next Sunday for brunch and just more general getting-to-know-each-other activities.

In effect, I just think it is really amazing that something inspired me and Josh to dig up a little information, and I am glad that we got such positive results so far. I think it will be great for all of us to get to know eachother and discover that there is some good in this family, despite the past injustices we have all had to deal with.
